Welcome to the Web home for Philosophy Bakes Bread, a radio show and podcast that first airs on WRFL Lexington, 88.1 FM, and is subsequently released as a podcast. Philosophy Bakes Bread is a production of the Society of Philosophers in America (SOPHIA) and is intended to showcase the public importance of philosophy, both for our everyday lives and for leadership in the policy world. The show launched in its present form in January of 2017.
Starting in February of 2018, the show began syndicating on KBLU 92.3 FM in Logan, Utah! If you run or listen to a radio station near you that you think might be interested in syndicating the show as well, reach out to SOPHIA’s Executive Director and co-host for the show, Dr. Eric Thomas Weber. If you’re encountering the show for the first time, check out our post about highlights of the first season (2017), in which we talk about our most downloaded episodes (at the time of writing it) as well as some of our favorites.
In May of 2017, Anthony and Eric were thrilled to learn that WRFL voted Philosophy Bakes Bread their “Favorite Talk Show” of the year. They even conferred upon us a cute tiny trophy and a bar of chocolate, of which Anthony tasted exactly zero pieces (What was Eric supposed to do, mail him half a bar?).
We could not feel more grateful to the WRFL family, which then voted in May of 2018 to name Philosophy Bakes Bread “Overall Favorite Show”!
The show originated as a pilot with four episodes that SOPHIA’s Executive Director, Dr. Eric Thomas Weber, tested out over the course of a year. You can find those episodes at PhilosophyBakesBread.com. As SOPHIA’s mission was redesigned in 2015, we sought to develop a number of avenues for building communities of philosophical conversation. One such effort was in transitioning this show to become a SOPHIA production on the radio, with co-hosts and interview guests. Part of the mission of WRFL Lexington is to offer “it’s listeners a source of music, news, and other programming not regularly found through other media outlets in central Kentucky.” We were very fortunate to be welcomed and encouraged to develop this show. Also, the station will provide the invaluable service of turning the broadcast show into a podcast to which people can subscribe. More info on how to do that is coming soon. That technical work is challenging and SOPHIA is very grateful to the staff at WRFL for helping us share our shows both in Lexington and around the interwebs.
Dr. Anthony Cashio of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise is our first guest on the show, in our first episode, and is serving as a co-host thereafter. Dr. Cashio was recognized with two major awards simultaneously in 2016 at UVA Wise, one issued from students and the other from faculty colleagues. He received the Student Government Association’s Professor of the Year award as well as the faculty nominated Outstanding Teaching Award.
In October of 2017, the blog of the American Philosophical Associate released a great interview that they completed with Cashio and Weber about the show. Response to the show has been very exciting to watch. Since the show’s first airing in mid-January of 2017, it has had over 31,800 downloads from 100 countries around the world, as of February 2018.
We have been honored to have spoken with a wonderful list of guests. They have included
Dr. Martha Nussbaum, recipient of the 2016 Kyoto Prize, who joined us to talk about her latest book and its relevance to the anger we see today in American politics. Her book is titled Anger and Forgiveness: Resentment, Generosity, Justice (Oxford University Press, 2016).
In addition to interviewing a number of SOPHIA members and friends, we have also been fortunate to have had the chance to interview Matthew Yglesias of Vox.com. If you’ve got ideas for us about people who would make great guests, or topics you really want to hear about, let us know!
The show features a special segment called “You Tell Me!” We ask our guest(s) and we as co-hosts think too about what provocative question would be great to hear about from our listeners. Listen for those questions and if you’re interested, reach out to us. We also welcome comments, questions, and lavish praise, and there are a number of ways of contacting us. You can email us at philosophybakesbread@gmail.com. If you’re on Twitter, follow us @PhilosophyBB. You can also like us on Facebook @PhilosophyBakesBread. While you’re there, check our our profiles for the Society of Philosophers in America (SOPHIA), which are also linked to on the society’s Web site, PhilosophersInAmerica.com. Last but not least, you can also call us and leave us a short, recorded voicemail that we might be able to play on the show, if you call us at 859.257.1849.
In addition to general comments and questions, or to your answers to our “You Tell Me!” segment questions, consider sending us your thoughts about topics that you want to hear us cover on the show. We want to hear from you and it’s never been easier than it is today for radio listeners to get in touch with us and help us craft the show you will enjoy most.

About the show that launched in 2017 on radio and podcast:
Thanks for everything and spurring me into a more philosophical way of life. ~ Kit
Phenomenal episode on PBB… [episode 83 on Philosophy & Environmental Policy with @AndrwLight] … I really enjoy your podcast. Thanks for bringing these discussions into the public light. ~ Heath Kelly (@Heathalot)
I’ve been listening to your podcasts on Spotify, starting with episode 1. As someone who earned a bachelor’s in philosophy, I appreciate not only the academic discussions, but also the personal testimonies on how philosophy has influenced the personal lives of yourselves and the guest speakers. It forces me to recall how I first got involved with philosophy, and motivates me to continue pursuing philosophy, whether through reading or discussions with others. Thanks! ~ Mike from Pittsburg
… All of society should hear this… Here’s a show for you… Ep1 – The Molemen and Plato’s Cave Today episode of Philosophy Bakes Bread. ~ Heath Kelly (@Heathalot)

I expressed my love privately but I have to say publicly, Eric Thomas Weber’s podcast alongside Anthony Cashio Philosophy Bakes Bread is absolutely amazing.
